On suspicion of aiding in the international smuggling of migrants, Libyan authorities have detained the commercial director of a private airline with its headquarters in the country. It is said that hundreds of people were flown to Nicaragua by Ghadames Airlines, from which smugglers arranged additional flights to the United States.
The private airline is charged with transporting “hundreds of people wishing to enter the territory of the United States through the territory of the Republic of Nicaragua, in violation of applicable immigration rules,” according to a statement released by the attorney general’s office in Libya.
According to the company’s website, Ghadames Airline was established in 2021 and has its headquarters in Tripoli, the official capital of Libya.
The claims give the story of migration in European contexts a new angle.
Like most airlines based in Libya, Ghadames Airlines is prohibited from flying over the European Union due to security concerns.
The main causes of these security concerns are that political unrest in Libya following the overthrow of former dictator Muammar Gaddafi in 2011 has resulted in a sharp increase in violence and a state of civil war, with two opposing administrations fighting each other to the death in deadly attacks and conflicts over control of the nation.
The European Union is extremely concerned about how the resulting power vacuum has made Libya the entry point for migrants and refugees from Asia, the Middle East, and Africa.
The International Organization on Migration (IOM) reports that over 700 000 migrants are in the country, waiting for the right opportunity to travel to Europe. However, Libyan authorities assert that there may be up to 2.5 million foreigners in the country, the great majority of whom are believed to have entered illegally. Those figures are disputed, though.
As a result of increased efforts by the EU and its allies in North Africa, particularly Libya, to prevent migrants and refugees from traveling across the Mediterranean Sea to apply for asylum in Europe, more foreign nationals are becoming stranded in the nation, frequently in hazardous situations.
In light of this, it appears that people smugglers are looking for new ways to transfer migrants who are willing to pay overseas. They are investigating possibilities in the Global North, including the United States, by first going to Latin American nations with the goal of carrying on with their erratic land travels.
