On July 9, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced the suspension of the processing of asylum applications for migrants who arrived in Greece by sea from North Africa. The sea route from Libya to Europe via the southern Greek Islands has become increasingly popular among migrants, with authorities reporting over 7,300 arrivals since the beginning of the year. This surge in arrivals from Libya has led to the detention of more than 1,200 migrants on the island of Crete and the nearby islet of Gavdos over the past three days. In response to the recent influx, Greece plans to end mass legalisation programmes for migrants and to detain those awaiting deportation, with these measures set to take effect this summer.
